Only in California! The Los Angeles Police Department has recently released body camera footage that depicts an incident that occurred. The incident involved a man wielding a pair of swords accused of ruthlessly stabbing a woman.
The suspect is 23-year-old Eric Herrera who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 43-year-old woman suffered multiple stab wounds.
Local news channel KTLA reported that a family member identified the female victim as the suspect’s mother. The family member who spoke with the news crew claimed that Herrera had been troubled for some time and that an argument led to the gruesome attack.
Josh Gordon, a neighbor who witnessed the incident, also spoke with the media through the L.A. Times. He claims he heard the victim crying out for help and pleading with the suspect to stop the attack.
Gordon, who lives across the street from where the incident occurred, said the victim cried out to the suspect, “I’m your mother.”
At this time LAPD has not confirmed the relationship between Herrera and the victim.
“He did not seem to be in a lucid state,” Gordon said about Herrera. “He was moving and walking slowly. My main concern was the woman’s safety. There was a real sense of helplessness watching it happen from across the street.”
At the time of the. attack authorities received multiple calls about an assault with a deadly weapon. When police arrived on the scene around 11:20 p.m., they observed the suspect walking in the street holding a pair of swords.
The bodycam footage from the incident showed police telling the suspect to “put that sword down.” Officers continued to repeatedly instruct the suspect to drop his weapons.
Authorities used a Taser to restrain the suspect and take the weapons away after the suspect refused to cooperate with the verbal commands.
Additional officers at the scene canvassed the area looking for the victim. When they found the woman, she was covered in blood. According to police, the victim suffered multiple lacerations to her arm.
The woman spoke to law enforcement who rendered aid. She said that her daughter was still inside the house because she had instructed her to hide from the suspect. The victim believed her daughter was safe and had not been attacked by the suspect.
The woman was transported to a hospital. Later a family member reported that the victim was in stable condition.
Eric Herrera was taken into custody, and his bail was set to $100,000.
