Massive California Fire Intentional With Arson Suspect in Custody

It’s arson fire season in California, again. The most recent woodland blaze “destroying structures and prompting thousands of evacuations” threatens an area near the town of Chico. It was “allegedly started by a man who pushed a burning car into a gully.” Initial reports were sparse and sketchy but an industry source had the full scoop by Thursday afternoon. The details were worth waiting for.

Park fire clearly arson

The Park Fire, in Butte County near the city of Chico, was ignited intentionally on Wednesday, July 24, just before 3 p.m. local time. Overnight, it exploded into “the state’s largest blaze this wildfire season.

The 48-year-old arson suspect charged with starting it won’t be able to afford to pay the damages. The suspect “was arrested Thursday morning and jailed without bail.” Later, his name was released as Ronnie Dean Stout, “a twice-convicted felon and registered sex offender.

According to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, Stout was spotted “pushing a car that was on fire down a gully called ‘Alligator Hole‘ in Bidwell Park, near Chico.

Bystanders say it was something to watch. “The car went down an embankment approximately 60 feet and burned completely, spreading flames.

The suspect “was seen calmly leaving the area by blending in with other park visitors fleeing the rapidly evolving fire.

All the juicy details come from Wildfire Today. They begin by informing that it’s only at 3 percent containment Thursday evening. CAL FIRE IMT 3 is “in unified command with the Lassen National Forest.

Ronnie Dean Stout, “a twice-convicted felon and registered sex offender.”

His mother’s car

It turns out that the “car on fire” plunging “into a gully and down a 60-foot drop” was “Stout’s mother’s car.” The blaze it sparked was at 45,000 acres by morning and up to 75,000 acres Thursday afternoon. Latest reports say “It’s at 125,000 acres tonight burning in both Butte and Tehama counties.” They called in airtankers from throughout the state.

The weather is a factor and they’re “flying as conditions allow, along with over 1,100 personnel assigned, 6 helicopters, 41 dozers and 10 watertenders, 40 crews, and 153 engines.” All from one man’s temper tantrum. He’s probably a registered Democrat.

The industry insiders were excited that “by 8:00 p.m. the IC had requested 30 strike teams of any type engines.” That prompted them to parenthetically exclaim “(Holy immediate need Batman, 150 engines!)” That’s one monster fire.

Winds are definitely a factor and the temperatures are in the 80s. Three helicopters were available for night ops, and they spent the night finding hotspots to drop water on.

Stout is scheduled to be arraigned next week, Prosecutor Ramsey informs. Authorities are aware that structures have burned but don’t have a count on them yet.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Department was forced to “order evacuations for rural foothill communities in the area, including nearly the entire town of Cohasset, which has a population of about 400.” They’re hoping the bulldozers can cut firebreaks fast enough to “prevent the fire from spreading to homes in the densely populated areas of north Chico.
