Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker thought he had a winning ticket with the liberal horde.
Last year, he signed legislation to end cash bail.
That legislation was scheduled to take effect on January 1.
However, a Kankakee County judge has ruled the law violated the constitution and cannot be put into play.
Sorry, J.B.
The Illinois Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today (SAFE-T) Act was a major overhaul to the justice system in Illinois.
One of the biggest provisions in the legislation was the ending of the cash bail program.
Even though the state assembly passed the bill, 65 counties in the state wanted to challenge the new legislation.
For now, it has been defeated.
Pritzker was obviously upset with the ruling and plans on appealing the decision.
He stated, “Today’s ruling is a setback for the principles we fought to protect through the passage of the SAFE-T Act.
“The General Assembly and advocates worked to replace an antiquated criminal justice system with a system rooted in equity and fairness.
“We cannot and should not defend a system that fails to keep people safe by allowing those who are a threat to their community the ability to simply buy their way out of jail.
“I thank the Attorney General for his work on this case and look forward to the Illinois Supreme Court taking up the appeal as soon as possible.”
It is utterly amazing to me that today’s Democrats are more focused on helping people that are breaking our laws than the law-abiding citizens in this country.
