GOP Plan for Easing Stance on Abortion

The GOP has already committed to easing their official stance on abortion, to match Donald Trump’s platform agenda. He wants this to remain an issue for each state to decide individually. The move really upsets evangelical and other ultra-conservative social groups, who continue to insist on a total nationwide ban on the procedure, no matter what the circumstances. Trump and the GOP are moving forward anyway, saving that battle for another time.

Abortion the big issue

When it comes right down to it, the only issue to fight over in this year’s big election is abortion. It’s not really as polarizing as the network media insists on portraying.

While certainly true that far-left proponents of “women’s rights” are as radically vocal about their point of view as far-right crusaders against the brutal murder of defenseless babies, the vast majority aren’t fully committed. It’s a complex issue.

The GOP decided now isn’t the time to draw a line in the sand by promising a fight to the bitter end and outlaw abortion forever. While that would indeed make a lot of conservatives happy, it would alienate many more “moderate” conservatives. Not to mention “persuadable” Democrats.

The issue isn’t worth betting the election on, because the outcome this year is far too serious. As Donald Trump has been insisting all along, this is a matter for each of the individual states to decide for themselves, based on the wishes of their particular voters.

By deciding to simply not mention abortion in the official list of platform planks released on July 8, the GOP is choosing not to step on the rights of anyone. We the People have been insisting that the nanny-state federal government has been running far too many aspects of our lives. This is a perfect opportunity to ease that a little.

The vast majority of Americans, even the conservative ones, believe the mother should have at least some right to choose life or death for their unborn child. Along with that choice come consequences that the mother must live with. While always a “last resort,” the option should remain on the table. It’s not the time to shove a one size fits all solution down the throats of every citizen.

Now isn’t the time to draw a line in the sand by promising a fight to the bitter end.

Pro-Life Groups outraged

Hopefully, they’ll get over it but everyone from the Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, to Students for Life, to “a coalition led by the Family Research Council” are hopping mad. They came out in protest hoping to dissuade the GOP from making Trump’s position official.

Their views were acknowledged but the Republicans adopted Trump’s platform anyway. Anti-baby-killing leaders have been “expressing concern” about Trump’s stance on abortion because they want even thinking about baby killing to be a crime.

The far-right activists snarl that “weakening the platform would be abandoning all the progress the movement has made at limiting access to the procedure.

Their threats to not support Trump over the abortion issue seem hollow, though. That’s because they would never vote in such a way as to ensure a baby-killing democrat gets into office.

If the Trump campaign decides to remove national protections for the unborn in the GOP platform, it would be a miscalculation that would hurt party unity and destroy pro-life enthusiasm between now and the election.

That’s a bold stance. Especially when it boils down to advocating the abortion of America as a nation. That’s what would happen if Trump doesn’t regain his rightful place as commander of the free world in November.
