After they were attacked by a large group of Turkish citizens, several other service members came to their defense.
Police wound up arresting 15 locals for the attack.
Sounds of Silence
The attack reportedly took place against several members of the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship.
The Marines were walking through the Konak district in civilian clothes when members of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB), a youth branch of the nationalist opposition Vatan Party, attacked them.
The attack was confirmed by our Embassy in Turkey, which stated, “We can confirm reports that U.S. service members embarked aboard the USS Wasp were the victims of an assault in Izmir today, and are now safe.”
What did the Biden administration have to say about the attack? It put out a statement that it was “troubled” by the incident.
Relations between Turkey and the United States have not been the best over the last few years, largely in part because Turkey purchased an air defense system from the Russians.
This resulted in Turkey being hit with sanctions that also removed Turkey from the F-35 jet program.
Relations have softened in recent months, mostly due to Turkey’s role in helping to negotiate the hostage release from Hamas after its attack against Israel.
Regardless, saying this is “troubling” is hardly the response we would expect when our service members are attacked in the streets of a fellow NATO country.
Attacks like this happen because our country is now deemed to be weak by our enemies and adversaries.
It is the very same reason that you now see pro-Palestine and Hamas protesters in the streets of our major cities, literally setting them on fire.
Our country has lost its way, and I blame the Biden administration for it.
