Shop NowThe Trump administration has announced the plans for a new project that will give American artists an opportunity to create sculptures honoring American heroes in history, such as President George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Davy Crockett, to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday.
The National Endowment for the Humanities revealed in a press release that it will be providing artists, who must be U.S. citizens, with up to three grants each of $200,000 to sculpt one of 250 American historical figures that the Trump administration has identified as heroes to be placed in a new National Garden of American Heroes. The statues must be life-sized and made using brass, bronze, copper, granite, or marble.
This project was initially proposed by President Donald Trump in 2020, but former President Joe Biden chose to cancel it. The Trump administration was not able to fully roll out the plan before the president left office, but Trump announced its return earlier this year. The full details of the plan were not revealed until this week.

Acting National Endowment for Humanities Chairman Michael McDonald explained that the “garden will provide the public with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how the lives and accomplishments of these individuals have shaped our history and culture.”
The project, which will be done in partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, will cost roughly $34 million.
“The National Garden will feature Americans who deserve honor, recognition, and lasting tribute because of the battles they won, the ideas they championed, the diseases they cured, the lives they saved, the heights they achieved, and the hope they passed down,” the notice of funding explains.
The document also notes that the garden would be a spot for visitors to learn more about American history.
“It will also be a place where Americans can gather to learn about and celebrate America and the icons who made America what it is today. Visitors to the park will learn the stories of some of the greatest Americans,” the notice states.
Thus far, the Trump administration has not announced the specific location for the National Garden of Heroes. However, they have announced the list of historical figures to be featured in the garden, which will include President John Adams, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Civil War nurse Clara Barton, inventors Orville and Wilbur Wright, World War II General Douglas MacArthur, astronaut Neil Armstrong, Civil War soldier Joshua Chamberlain, Pilgrim leader William Bradford, music legend Johnny Cash, anti-slavery activist Frederick Douglas, founding father Patrick Henry, World War I hero Alvin York, and several others.
