Shop NowAs the anticipation for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign heats up, the former President has released a new video on Rumble announcing his plan to bring back manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs to the United States.
In this video, he stresses how critical this initiative is for public health and national security.
Here is what we know so far about his proposal and how it could affect the American people.
In 2020, Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13944 in an effort to initiate “reshoring” drug production.
This executive order required federal agencies to purchase essential medicines domestically rather than from countries with which the U.S. has trade agreements, it also required the U.S Trade Representative to modify existing international trade agreements accordingly.
Unfortunately, President Joe Biden reversed this order in 2021, making no progress toward restoring domestic drug production capabilities and instead increasing foreign manufacturing opportunities in China especially.
It is clear that this reversal was negligent as new drug shortages have increased by 30% since 2021 according to The British Medical Journal and delays in cancer treatment due to these shortages can lead up 10% increase of risk of death per month.
Furthermore, data shows that China was responsible for 23% of total pharmaceutical imports measured by weight last year—an alarming statistic given its increasingly adversarial relationship with America over recent months and years.
President Trump believes that reversing Executive Order 13944 must be one of his top priorities if he reclaims office; he plans on imposing tariffs and other import restrictions until all essential medication can be manufactured domestically again—which will also create countless jobs for Americans who need them most right now during an uncertain time, economically speaking.
He emphasizes his commitment to ensuring public safety through better access to healthcare while simultaneously promoting economic growth—a winning combination.
