New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is facing criticism from her own party, California Democratic Representative Ted Lieu, and liberal gun control activist David Hogg. This follows the governor’s decision to temporarily suspend open and concealed carry laws in Albuquerque, citing recent fatal shootings of young children as a reason for the order.
I support gun safety but there is no such thing as a state public health emergency exception to the U.S. Constitution. https://t.co/6GfbOZLc7g

Lieu tweeted that there can be no state public health emergency exception to the US Constitution. Hogg followed up agreeing with Lieu saying that Grisham’s reasoning for the temporary ban did not hold water. Rep. Grisham’s press secretary Caroline Sweeney responded by saying that her order does not suspend the Constitution but rather New Mexico laws over which she has jurisdiction.
I mean… who steals tweets from Ted Lieu?? David Hogg apparently. https://t.co/llUGSdl5Md pic.twitter.com/tItDjABQW2

Grisham also invited Lieu to join their next police academy class if he wanted to help curb gun violence. Two Republican legislators in New Mexico, Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block have called for impeachment proceedings against Governor Grisham due to this “radical” agenda she is trying to impose on residents without their consent or approval.
Problems continue to pile up for Gov. Grisham in her flagrantly unconstitutional order suspending Second Amendment rights. Now the sheriff is declaring “as an officer of the court, I cannot and will not enforce something that is clearly unconstitutional.” https://t.co/aURAa8Ict9

The Governor’s actions have sparked debate among those who both agree and disagree with her approach on this issue, with some conservatives mocking her loss of support from two liberals who champion gun control while other politicians such as Republican Senator Ted Cruz expressed shock over agreeing with a Democrat on a gun issue.
wow. wow. wow.
Here are words I’ve never said before:@tedlieu is right. ???? https://t.co/MHNnfrJu8I

“In a shocking move, Governor Lujan Grisham is suspending Second Amendment rights by administrative fiat, ignoring the US Constitution and the New Mexico Constitution. Instead of undermining the fundamental rights of law-abiding New Mexicans, she should address the soft-on-criminal policies which truly endanger its citizens,” reacted NRA-ILA Executive Director Randy Kozuch.
It’s an emergency for sure — that this hack politician would suspend gun rights in violation of the 2nd amendment in the Bill of Rights is an urgent emergency!https://t.co/D3DhJEu7bU

It remains unclear how successful these efforts will be or what impact they will have on reducing gun violence in New Mexico or beyond its borders – but it is clear that tensions are high amongst Democrats on this controversial subject matter of guns and firearm safety regulations at both state and federal levels across the US.
