In an interview on left-wing ABC News show “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos, Meijer was asked if he had committed “political suicide.”
“Oh, I may very well have, but I think it’s also important that we have elected leaders who are not thinking solely about what’s in their individual self-interest. Not what is going to be politically expedient, but what we actually need for the country,” Meijer responded.
“I want to make sure that we have leaders in office who are folks saying, you know, the fact that we are a nation of laws, not men, and who are putting the interest of the country first rather than our own political careers,” he added.
Prior to his impeachment vote, Meijer issued the following statement:
President Trump betrayed his oath of office by seeking to undermine our constitutional process, and he bears responsibility for inciting the insurrection we suffered last week. With a heavy heart, I will vote to impeach President Donald J. Trump. pic.twitter.com/SREfFp0nd2

Meijer is just one in a long line of RINOs, Republicans in Name Only, who have betrayed President Trump and his supporters, many of whom were responsible for putting him in office. Meijer and others have chosen to side with the Democrats, perhaps for political power, the chance to be brought on left-wing media outlets like ABC News as a “reasonable Republican,” or just because they are short-sighted.
It is highly unlikely that their reasoning is purely moral, or to “put the country before their career” as they claim.
