Shop NowPresident Joe Biden is calling for dramatic gun control legislation that would impose bans on certain types of handguns, while Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is attempting to ban the purchase of handguns altogether. Biden has suggested that he intends to push a ban on 9mm handguns following the latest mass shooting in Texas. Trudeau, responding to the same tragedy, is proposing a massive crackdown on private firearm ownership.
Canada to ban handguns
Canada lacks a constitutional guarantee for gun ownership like the Second Amendment in the United States, but firearms are still common in rural areas.
Proximity to the United States inspired Trudeau to pledge action in response to the Texas shooting, though his response is largely opportunistic.
A rifle was used in the shooting, but Trudeau has already banned “assault-style weapons,” the category which would otherwise include the weapon used by the shooter.
“Assault weapon” is a category of weapon invented by the media to describe firearms with certain cosmetic features, so the Canadian ban specifically targets 1,500 models that supposedly have these characteristics.
Handguns are much easier to define, and Trudeau intends to eliminate private ownership by implementing a complete ban on sales and purchases.
Owning a handgun will technically not be illegal, but with no way to legally obtain one private ownership will gradually vanish as remaining owners voluntarily turn in their firearms or pass away.
Biden suggests 9mm ban
Trudeau also plans to mandate that all rifle magazines be modified to hold no more than five rounds of ammunition, and it would ban airsoft guns and other items that look like real firearms.
He says that there is no reason for any Canadian to own a gun outside of sport shooting and hunting. Biden has not gone that far, but his latest comments are clearly supportive of that stance.
The president is now supporting a ban on 9mm handguns, the most popular pistol caliber in the United States and a popular choice for self-defense.
While Biden did not follow Trudeau in opposing the use of firearms for self-defense, his justification for a 9mm ban is that this caliber can kill or maim a human, which is the purpose of a gun meant for self-defense.
He also repeated his false claim that the Second Amendment originally banned cannons, something which he claims parallels the current situation.
In fact, the Second Amendment originally guaranteed citizens the right to own cannons and any other weapons they desired. Bans on specific weapon types is a relatively recent development.
