A GOP mayor resigns after she publicly supported stripping freedom away from Americans in the form of a mask mandate.
GOP Mayor Resigns
The western Kansas Republican mayor gave a letter to city officials on Tuesday that she is resigning immediately from her position. In the letter as well as on her social media, she said she resigns due to threats she has gotten after she supported making masks mandatory for the people of Kansas.
Mayor Joyce Warshaw of Dodge City made claims that she is fearing for her safety and has received threats via phone and email. This was after a USA Today article quoted her supporting the unconstitutional mandate.
Stripping Away Freedoms
The city commission successfully voted on November 16 to impose a mask mandate with a vote of 4-1.
But Warshaw told NBC News on Tuesday that “threats, accusations and actions” toward her and her family from those in the community forced her to step down.
“[It was a] very very tough, difficult decision to make because I have no regrets about any of my actions or decisions I made as mayor but I think it’s best to move on,” Warshaw said. “Particularly my husband said ‘you’re done, you’re done.’ Maybe the city can just move on.”
Republicans Not Sad to See Mayor Go
A statement released by the city commission says that her resignation came on Tuesday morning via a letter.
“Life has dealt out many challenges in our world that have perhaps caused many people to act inappropriately but I do not feel safe in this position anymore and am hopeful in removing myself this anger, accusations and abuse will not fall on anyone else and will calm down,” she said in the letter.
Even though she resigns, the mayor still says she does not regret voting to make residents wear masks against their will.
“[I] still love Dodge City with all of my heart and believe in it,” she said.
