The holiday weekend was a complete disaster in terms of travel.

Due to a major storm, airlines were canceling flights left and right.

As bad as it was, Southwest was canceling as many as 70 percent of its flights.

The Department of Transportation released a blistering statement on the matter, but what Secretary Buttigieg actually plans on doing about it remains to be seen.

Unacceptable

There were obviously going to be cancellations due to the weather.

But if you flew on Southwest, you had a better chance of being stranded than you did of getting where you had planned.

The situation is not going to get better anytime soon, as the airline said that it expected to only be flying about 30 percent of its routes will into the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation stated, “USDOT is concerned by Southwest Airlines’ disproportionate and unacceptable rate of cancellations and delays, as well as the failure to properly support customers experiencing a cancellation or delay.

“As more information becomes available, the department will closely examine whether cancellations were controllable and whether Southwest is complying with its customer service plan, as well as all other pertinent DOT rules.”

Southwest Airlines responded, “With consecutive days of extreme winter weather across our network behind us, continuing challenges are impacting our Customers and Employees in a significant way that is unacceptable.”

“We were fully staffed and prepared for the approaching holiday weekend when the severe weather swept across the continent, where Southwest is the largest carrier in 23 of the top 25 travel markets in the U.S.

“These operational conditions forced daily changes to our flight schedule at a volume and magnitude that still has the tools our teams used to recover the airline operating at capacity.”
