Freedom

This is How the Republican ‘Freedom Force’ is Born

It was the equal and opposite reaction, it was an act of Newtonian political physics, it was inevitable. This is How the Republican ‘Freedom Force’ is Born. ‘Elections have consequences’ after all.

Who are the “Freedom Force”?

Congresswoman-elect Maria Elvira Salazar, Republican of Florida has tweeted for people to join a “Freedom Force” because,

“my parents fled Castro’s socialist nightmare.–we can’t just let the socialist left destroy the American Dream for our children!”

Salazar tweeted this in response to an article from The Hill. This “Freedom Force” seems to have been embraced by fellow freshman Republican Congresswomen, Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN).

Its all about Socialism and Pain

For Spartz, Malliotakis and Salazar, their desire to battle socialism comes from the pain of memory, stories told by family and lived by parents and grandparents. Salazar and Malliotakis are of Cuban descent, while Spartz herself grew up in Soviet Ukraine.

“I want to create a force within my freshman class that will have to be reckoned with. A force of reason, a force for freedom, a force for democracy,” Salazar told NBC News.

“We need to form our own ‘Squad.’ We have a group of new Republicans who love America. We value freedom, liberty and opportunity,” Malliotakis told The New York Post.

Spartz told Fox News. “I grew up in a socialistic country, the Socialist Republic of Ukraine, I saw what happens when it runs out of money and it is not pretty. And now we’re building socialism. I’m kind of going full circles. I can tell you what is going to be next. It’s very sad for me to see that.”

For Malliotakis it may be even more personal, as she’s taking the fight to a member of her own state’s delegation. She told Politico,

“She obviously is pushing a socialist agenda. I’m someone who takes that very seriously … There’s certainly a stark contrast,” Malliotakis said.  “And the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn, I believe, voted for me in part because they did want someone who was going to push back on the far left agenda taking over New York City.”

How AOC and “The Squad” Have Responded

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her “squad” of Progressive-Socialist leaning colleagues: Ilhan Omar, (D-MN), Ayanna Pressley, (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib, (D-MI) have been largely silent about this newly developing team. Only Cortez told NBC News:

“I mean it sounds ridiculous to me. I think they think they’re in high school. We’re in Congress,”

This is an interested distinction, given that it was ‘AOC’ herself who gave her own group their ‘nomme du guerre’ via instagram Nov. 18th 2018.

Ocasio-Cortez claims the title was ascribed to them by the media, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Trump. However, Rep. Pressley gave it some legitimacy at a press conference in July 2019 according to Vox.

“Our squad is big,” Pressley said at a press conference Monday. “Our squad includes any person committed to creating a more equitable and just world.

What does the future hold for this “Freedom Force”

It remains to be seen whether this new alignment of freshman Congresswomen will capture the attention of the national media as “The Squad” did. But for every force, there is a counter-force, for every action, an equal and opposite reaction. Where socialism seeks to take hold, those who hold freedom dear will rise to meet it.
