Two employees of a Stockton, California 7-Eleven store have been cleared of any wrongdoing by the District Attorney’s office. The incident happened on July 29 and was caught on video when a man in a mask tried to rob the store.

The man was seen reaching for his back pocket as an employee approached him, prompting someone nearby to yell “Just let him go, there’s nothing you can do.”

As the suspect attempted to leave with a trash can full of stolen products, the two employees tackled him and hit him with a pole until he dropped the items and ran off. The same suspect is believed to have committed two other robberies at the same 7-Eleven location within 24 hours prior to this one.

Police responded quickly but were unable to catch the suspect due to California state law which makes it difficult for businesses and law enforcement alike when dealing with shoplifting incidents.

Mayor Kevin Lincoln released a statement emphasizing that it is important for authorities to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

District Attorney Ron Freitas stated that “the store clerks are not and have never been suspects” of the DA’s Office and that “any investigation going forward is to hold accountable the individual who threatened and attempted to rob the store clerks.”

“California state law, Proposition 47, hinders businesses daily by increasing shoplifting incidents and decreasing our law enforcement’s ability to hold accountable those responsible for such acts,” Lincoln added in a statement to the press.

In light of these events, many people are becoming more aware of how shoplifting incidents can cause serious problems for businesses across California. It is important that business owners take steps necessary to protect their property such as installing security cameras or hiring additional security guards if needed.

This incident is just one of many that serve as an example of why California and other blue states need stronger laws against theft and DAs that will actually prosecute crime in order to keep our communities safe.
