A staggering number of prominent American artists and groups on American soil have announced their support of Palestinian terrorists in an open letter. The group call themselves #MusiciansForPalestine, and less than a week after the Israeli government and Hamas terrorists reached a cease fire agreement which brought the unrestricted rocket attacks against the Israeli people and the targeted reprisals from the IDF to at least a temporary end.
#MusiciansForPalestine, Clearly Aren’t Historians
In an open letter these public figures spouted, simplistic, ridiculously mal-informed, victimhood driven anti-semitic propaganda. Here are a few examples:
“Today, we speak together and demand justice, dignity and the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people and all who are fighting colonial dispossession and violence across the planet,”
“The Israeli government operates a settler-colonial project committed to the ethnic
cleansing of the Palestinian population. The legacies of systemic violence, racism
and dispossession shaped by colonialism must stop. We call on all governments to
stop funding all resources and technologies that back the Israeli state and their war
Israel doesn’t represent Colonial dispossession as Israel was never a colonial posession, it was a conquered province of the Ottoman Empire and is the historic homeland of the Jewish people who took the opportunity of the Ottomans (the muslim nation that last dispossessed THEM) being deposed to return to their homeland.
“Silence is not an option as residents of Sheikh Jarrah in occupied Jerusalem are
continuously forced out of their homes.”
As broken down in Patriot United News it isn’t that simple, and it’s extremely dishonest to frame the property dispute this way. The homes that are being evicted in Sheikh Jarrah do not and never did legally belong to the Palestinians who have been squatting there. These properties were illegally seized by Jordanians from their Jewish owners who purchased them under Ottoman rule over a century ago only to be “leased” to the Palestinians by the occupying Jordanian forces. As Israel fought successful wars against Jordan and other Arab nations and retook their native soil, ownership was restored to the original Jewish families and organizations.
These cases were fought through the various Israeli courts for almost 50 years and finally have been ruled upon. The Palestinian squatters had their day in court: they lost.
Some Surprising and Dismaying Signatories on American Soil
Some 600 musicians and artists have signed this ill-informed, childishly simplistic screed demonizing the Jewish people merely for defending themselves in their own lands. The vast majority will be unrecognized by a few stood out for example:
-Airick Asher Woodhead, Doldrums
-Anees The Rapper
-Black Thought & Questlove of the Roots
-Julian Casablancas of The Strokes
-Royce Da 5’9″
-Sarah Neufeld of Arcade Fire
-Run the Jewels, Noname,
-Serj Tankian of System of a Down
-Fred Wreck, A-Trak,
-Rage Against the Machine (SHOCKER)
-Patti Smith, Chromeo,
-Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth,
-Roger Waters of Pink Floyd.
-Jaclyn Blumas, Doomsquad
-Ian Ilavsky, Constellation Records
-Godspeed You! Black Emperor
-Eric Blitz, Astral Knife
Some of these artists’ decision to support this letter is truly baffling such as Serj Tankian of System of a Down. Given Tankian’s Armenian heritage and support of their cause(s). The disconnect here is confusing since that the father of modern Palestinian Nationalism Muhammad Amin al-Husayni the Mufti of Jerusalem colluded with Nazis as they were using the Ottoman Armenian genocide as a template for the Holocaust.
It’s extremely clear: these musicians know little or nothing about the history and interwoven complexities of property ownership in Israel. While they certainly have the right to these opinions and their free speech, all they did in this situation was highlight their ignorance.
