no fly zone

RINO Demands a No Fly Zone Without Knowing What it is

Representative Maria Salazar of Florida has had an interesting year so far for a Republican. Salazar was last in the headlines for proposing a sweeping amnesty that would have offered a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants while suggesting increased border security as an afterthought. Now Salazar is demanding a no fly zone in Ukraine to stop Vladimir Putin. Does she know what that means? No. Has that stopped her from loudly calling for it? Of course not.

No fly zone first, ask questions later

Representative Salazar was asked directly if she would support a no fly zone. Without hesitation she responded that she would support that and anything else that would hurt Vladimir Putin and help the Ukrainians.

Asked about the consequences of declaring a no fly zone, Salazar responded “I don’t know what it will mean.” Keep in mind that this is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Informed that a no fly zone would mean shooting down Russian planes over Ukraine, Salazar maintained her enthusiasm. Upon being further informed that this would mean war with Russia, Salazar hastily retreated from the interview.

Supporters of intervention in Washington DC and in the media have glibly suggested declaring a no fly zone to “give the Ukrainians a fighting chance” without being clear about what that means.

Many of these war hawks are counting on the public being unaware of what is involved in that decision. Some, like Rep. Salazar, are apparently themselves not sure what they are asking for.

If Salazar knew what she was demanding then a question about starting world war three would not have left her so easily flustered and defensive.

More enthusiasm for war with Russia

Americans are used to hearing about a “no fly zone” being discussed for some little sandbox despotate as an easy solution that requires minimum effort and fulfills our urge to do something.

What interventionists are begging for here is nothing like that. Unlike Libya or Syria, Russia is very much willing and able to shoot back. Vladimir Putin has been very clear about how forcefully he will respond to any outside intervention in his war.

Airstrikes have not even played a defining role in the conflict so far; Russian military doctrine relies more heavily on artillery and rocket launchers for fire support.

Underestimating Russia has already been the downfall of a few overly confident empires. Interventionists might believe that the West only needs to show up and Moscow will inevitably fall; someone else was equally sure of this in 1941.

Salazar and her colleagues are freely suggesting something that could easily lead to death and destruction on a scale never seen before in human history. Some of them clearly don’t understand that there is even a risk here, let along that risk.

And this is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who should theoretically have a better understanding of these issues than most members of Congress. How did such ignorant people gain so much power?
