One of the reasons that Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) was installed as the new Speaker was because he supports the idea of single-issue legislation.
Now, Johnson is an academic, so get ready for some fancy words in his pressers.
To that very point, he just stated that he has informed the White House that Biden needs to “bifurcate” issues such as aid to Ukraine and Israel.
Split It Up
With past comments made by Johnson on aid packages to Ukraine, it was a natural question if he would be supporting the requests made by Biden.
Johnson responded, “I told the staff at the White House today that our consensus among House Republicans is that we need to bifurcate those issues.”
Johnson continued, “Now, we can’t allow Vladimir Putin to prevail in Ukraine, because I don’t believe it would stop there, and it would probably encourage and empower China to perhaps make a move on Taiwan. We have these concerns.
“We’re not going to abandon them. But we have a responsibility, a stewardship responsibility, over the precious treasure of the American people.
“And we have to make sure that the White House is providing the people with some accountability for the dollars.”
I think that is all we have ever asked.
Biden has been writing checks without demanding accountability, as well as hiding money in other legislation, and that needs to stop.
I have wanted single-issue legislation for years, so this is a welcome change in my book.
