Mystery Murder Suicide Holds Another Dark Detail…

The tragic murder reported when a family of five was discovered dead in their upscale North Phoenix home could have been a whole lot worse. Fire officials aren’t talking about why the house didn’t blow sky high, taking half the neighborhood with it, but it should have.

Mysterious murder suicide

Police discovered a toddler, two infants, and their parents tragically deceased, at an obvious murder scene. They came to investigate after getting a call from the family’s nanny.

The alert came in Wednesday morning, November 16, and officers were dispatched to a home near 7th Avenue and Northern. The caller had found an “unresponsive person” but couldn’t check further because of a “strong gas odor.” That was around 8:00 a.m.

Phoenix firefighters scrambled, with a Hazardous Materials team right behind them, from nearby Glendale. On arrival they “quickly mitigated the danger,” police note. The murder threat ended with an apparent suicide so the only danger to mitigate was the gas.

Officials quickly evacuated the entire area while they carefully ventilated the premises. The slightest carpet shock could have blown them all to Tucson.

They couldn’t do much about the bodies because there were a whole collection of open and empty propane bottles and the gas line had been unhooked from the stove. It was still spraying natural gas like a fire hose.

The deceased killer apparently planned the shot meant to do him in to detonate the fumes, covering up the murder. It didn’t. They must also have a house without a single pilot light. Flipping a light switch could have blasted a new crater.

Four hours to air out

As reported by local outlets, “It took hours for HAZMAT teams to get rid of the gas and secure the home before police could safely access the crime scene, which they finally did around noon.” Since then, it has been confirmed as a murder suicide incident.

It was verified that 44-year-old Jasen Hudgens killed his wife, 40-year-old Marla Hudgens and the couple’s three kids — 3-year-old Christopher and 6-month-olds Gwen and Faye. Jasen worked with utility company Salt River Project, while Marla “was a well-regarded partner at the Phoenix law firm Lewis Roca. She was also heavily involved in charity work and coached a girls’ soccer team.

Nobody expected a murder. Friends of Marla Hudgens note “that her and Jasen’s marriage was unhappy and she wanted to end it, but they never thought it could lead to violence, let alone claim the lives of their children.

We never had any indication from her that she felt scared or threatened or unsafe,” close friend Brett Hagerty relates.

Phoenix police spokesperson, Sergeant Melissa Soliz, called the murder “a complete tragedy. Not only is this devastating to the first responders that had to respond and witness what’s inside, but this neighborhood is very close-knit including the extended loved ones and family members that are related to this home and this residence.

Friend Khanh Andersen adds “that the deaths come just two months after Marla’s sister committed suicide.
