Kamala Harris has been in politics for decades, which can be an advantage for most candidates. In this case, her record shows a lot about her character and her plans for taking office.
Attorney General Baggage
After her seven year career as the District Attorney of San Francisco (2004-2011), Kamala Harris won a close race to become the Attorney General of California (2010-2017). After taking power, she took a ‘tough on crime’ stance that became a controversial point in her presidential bid during the 2020 primary.
Most people remember the devastating moment that Tulsi Gabbard attacked Harris for her record. Gabbard brought up many troubling decisions made by Harris, including the time that Harris blocked DNA evidence from being used to free an innocent man on death row, and her decision had to be overturned by the court.
“She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California, and she fought to keep the cash bail system in place that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way,” Gabbard also stated.
Her Record of Silencing Dissent
As Attorney General, Kamala Harris didn’t just focus on crime, she also used her position to silence her ideological opponents.
In 2014, David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood staff admitting to selling aborted baby body parts for a profit. One of the staff members even jokes about buying a Lamborghini with the profits.
Planned Parenthood hired Fusion GPS, the firm that is now famous for assembling the Trump-Russia dossier, to conceal the facts and suggest the videos were deceptively edited.
Harris has received at least $81,000 in donations from Planned Parenthood. As Attorney General at the time the videos were publicized, her office searched Daleiden’s home and seized the video footage in preparation for a case against him.
Xavier Becerra, Harris’ successor and Planned Parenthood-backed politician, filed 15 felony charges against both Daleiden and CMP.
“I could point you to undercover investigations that are being shown on the evening news in Los Angeles. Under the standard they are applying to David, those would be felonies. The other reporters are being lauded for their brave investigative techniques, but David is being prosecuted,” Peter Breen, special counsel at the Thomas More Society, said about the case.
Breen also argued that Daleiden filmed all of his videos in “entirely public places.”
“I would say this is an abuse of the criminal process,” Breen continued.
Even pro-choice law professors have defended Daleiden’s undercover journalism.
“I believe too strongly in American ideals to think that Kamala Harris and Xavier Becerra will be able to imprison innocent American citizens for our First Amendment speech,” Daleiden said. “But the fact that, working with Planned Parenthood, they have pulled out all the stops to try to do so? That should concern and outrage every American.”
Radical LGBT activist
When Proposition 8 was voted on in California in 2008, and citizens chose to define marriage as the union between one man and one woman, Harris refused to defend their decision when it was challenged in court.
Fifty-two percent of Californians (more than 7 million people) voted for traditional marriage, while forty-eight percent (around 6.4 million people) voted the other way.
California’s Supreme Court ruled against its’ own people, deciding that marriage must be opened to same-sex couples, and the state constitution was amended to reflect the decision. For the first time in the history of California, both the state’s governor and attorney general refused to defend a constitutional amendment.
Harris actively celebrated the defeat of an amendment that her constituents voted upon by officiating the first same-sex marriage at San Francisco City Hall.
Kamala Harris continued down this path when she became a senator. In 2018, she started by attacking President Trump’s judicial nominees over their membership in the Knights of Columbus.
Speaking to Judge Peter Phipps, she asked how he would approach the subject of abortion, due to his membership in “a group that avowedly opposes abortion.” Harris asked if he had to “swear an oath in order to join” KOC, and whether “litigants in your court can expect a fair hearing … when [KOC’s] organizational values conflict with litigants’ constitutional rights.”
Brian Buescher, another nominee and member of the Knights of Columbus, was grilled by Harris in the Senate. She asked him: “Were you aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization?” She then continued to press him on the subject of same-sex marriage, due to the fact that KOC spent $1 million supporting Proposition 8.
Harris also joined her Democrat colleagues in pressuring Allison Rushing, a judicial nominee, over her relationship with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a Christian law firm. Harris asked Rushing if she believes “that LGBT rights cannot be reconciled with religion.” She referenced the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) in her argument, which compares the ADF to the KKK, listing the organization as a “hate group.”
Demonizing Brett Kavanaugh
Kamala Harris was one of the worst offenders when it came to the Democrats’ merciless slanders against Trump’s second Supreme Court nominee, Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Prior to the sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and others, Harris tried to suggest that Kavanaugh had hidden sympathies towards white supremacists.
Harris also pushed Kavanaugh to condemn President Trump’s comments in response to the Charlottesville incident from 2017. The judge calmly upheld the independence of the judicial branch, stating that judges “are not pundits” and “stay out of political controversy.” Harris refused to accept this response, but eventually moved on to another topic.
Senator Harris also tried to use Kavanaugh’s past statements against him in multiple ways, even when he was quoting other people. She asked him about the phrase “racial spoils system”, which Kavanaugh used in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal when explaining different arguments against a Hawaii law which restricted voting to people of a certain race. In the op-ed, Kavanaugh defended the rights of all people, “whether Latino or African-American or Caucasian, for example.”
Harris also attempted to call out Kavanaugh for using the phrase “abortion-inducing drugs” while summarizing another person’s argument in the court case Priests for Life v. Burwell.
“Kavanaugh chooses his words very carefully, and this is a dog whistle for going after birth control. He was nominated for the purpose of taking away a woman’s constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions. Make no mistake — this is about punishing women,” Kamala Harris tweeted.
If Harris had been honest, she would have known Kavanaugh was not speaking about “punishing women.” He had been summarizing Priests for Life’s argument. Kavanaugh went on to say that government has a “compelling interest” in ensuring that women had access to birth control, in the very same case summary.
Her attacks on Joe Biden
It is rather strange that Biden would choose Kamala Harris as his running mate after her brutal attacks on him during the Democrat presidential primary.
In one of his statements during the debate, Biden reminisced about an era of civility in politics, and actually praised segregationists in the Democrat party.
“To coddle the reputations of segregationists, of people who if they had their way, I would literally not be standing here as a member of the United States Senate … it’s misinformed and it’s wrong. Let’s be very clear. The senators that he is speaking of with such adoration are individuals who made and built their reputation on segregation. The Ku Klux Klan celebrated the election of one of them,” Harris responded.
Harris also attacked Biden for opposing federally-mandated busing to racially integrate schools. During the debate, she claimed: “There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me.”
The problem with that statement is that desegregation of Berkeley, California public schools started the year before Harris was born.
Other Issues
Harris also has a pandering problem. Last February, while speaking on the podcast “The Breakfast Club”, Harris told the host that she smoked marijuana in college while listening to Snoop Dogg and Tupac.
Harris graduated Howard University in 1986, and UC Hastings College of the Law in 1989. Tupac’s first album came out in 1991. Snoop Dogg’s first album came out in 1993.
If Harris really did smoke marijuana in college, it brings up her blatant hypocrisy on the issue. According to Forbes, “As a prosecutor, Harris oversaw more than 1,900 cannabis related convictions in San Francisco.”
