GOP Sweep Takes Nation By Storm

GOP voter turnout across the country has made it possible for Republicans to reclaim key political positions.

GOP Seats Secured

In Virginia, three Democrat city council members were replaced by Republican candidates in a massive GOP sweep. In another instance, a Republican secured a congressional seat in hyper-liberal California, which Democrats have held on to for more than two decades.

As critical elections are on the horizon, such as the much anticipated 2020 presidential election, it appears that Republicans are making their voices known to reclaim a GOP majority on both state and federal levels.

Even though the Staunton, Virginia Democrats acquired more votes than they previously did four years ago, Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey joined re-elected Andrea Oakes to take four city council seats, WHSV reported.

High Voter Turnout Creates GOP Sweep

Despite the Democratic incumbents receiving close to double the number of votes from 2016, the Republican candidates still secured a massive victory.

“Democrats got their voters out better than they have in a May cycle in years,” Augusta Free Press reporter Chris Graham wrote. “Republicans got turnout more akin to, not quite a presidential year, but approaching gubernatorial.”

Gun control legislation and COVID-19 lockdowns in the state were contributing factors for the large GOP voter turnout as theorized by Graham.

“Bottom line is that the strategies worked, flipping both from D to R, but the change in Staunton is stunning almost beyond words,” Graham said. “A city that voted for Barack Obama, twice, voted for Hillary Clinton, voted for Terry McAuliffe and Ralph Northam, even gave a solid majority to Jennifer Lewis in her 2018 congressional run against Ben Cline, is now controlled by Republicans.”

Key Seat in California Flipped Red

An even more surprising incident occurred when Republican Mike Garcia beat Democrat Christy Smith to secure a California House of Representatives seat.

In the 2018 midterm elections, Republicans had lost the seat by a staggering double-digit margin. Last year, Democrat Katie Hill resigned due to a sex scandal that opened up the position in the 25th district that Garcia ultimately won. The last time a member of the GOP held the seat was in 1998. The district is comprised of northern Los Angeles County as well as parts of Ventura County.

Democrats control a whopping 53 congressional districts in California, with Republicans only holding six.

President Trump gave his support to Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot.

He tweeted: “Mike has my complete & total endorsement. We need him badly in Washington. A great fighter pilot & hero, & a brilliant Annapolis grad, Mike will never let you down. Mail in ballots, & check that they are counted!”

Momentum Needed for Upcoming Elections

If the GOP wave continues into November, Republicans are looking at having a realistic shot and regaining control of the House – a victory that could be a game-changer for the country going forward.
