It all started at 7 am one Sunday morning, 9 am Eastern time when a group of gunmen in armored vehicles arrived at the prison. At this time, the assailants opened fire on security personnel, the prosecutor’s office said.
At least 24 prisoners took advantage of the chaos and escaped the facility, say officials.
It is unclear who was behind the attack at this time, but it isn’t the first time this prison has seen such deadly use of force.
And where do you think these inmates are going to go!? https://t.co/5Wb9FRIhaI

Ciudad Juarez lies just across the US-Mexico border from El Paso, Texas. It is one of Mexico’s deadliest cities due to the drug cartels that frequent the area. Juarez and Sinaloa are rival cartels that have been fighting a bloody turf war in the region. They fight over lucrative smuggling routes into the US and for drug-dealing territory in the city.
This particular attack on the prison there was not the first time such violence has been used by the cartels. Last August, hundreds of Mexican troops were sent there after a clash between the two warring cartels caused a riot and shootouts. In that incident, 11 people died.
Authorities reported at the time that hundreds of Mexican soldiers were sent to the border city of Juarez due to a prison face-off between members of two rival cartels. The chaos of the attack caused a riot in the prison that killed 11 people. Those killed were mostly civilians.
