China has announced another set of military drills in the area surrounding Taiwan. This after a second congressional delegation meeting with Taiwanese officials.
A group of five legislators, led by Democrat Senator Ed Markey, went to Taiwan this past weekend and met with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.
In an official statement Mackey’s office spoke of the nature of the trip, “the group will meet with elected leaders and members of the private sector to discuss shared interests including reducing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and expanding economic cooperation.”
Democrat Reps. John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal, and Don Beyer, as well as Republican Congressional Delegate from Samoa Amata Catherine Coleman Radewagen, joined Mackey on the trip.
According to China’s statement, the “sea and airspace” around Taiwan will once again be filled with the Chinese military who will conduct drills by China’s eastern theater command in response to the visit.
Drills have been used by China in the past as a scare tactic and are meant to deter Taiwanese and American relations according to an official statement made by the Eastern Theater Command:
