Shop NowJoe Biden’s handlers made a deal with Vladimir Putin to trade his favorite hitman for former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. It’s not clear who got the better deal but the important part is the Americans are on their way home.
Prisoner trade frees two dozen
The press is calling Thursday’s trade of prisoners between the U.S. and Russia “historic.” On August 1, Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich “were released as part of a sweeping deal that involved at least seven countries.”
Our side got back “16 people who were held in Russian detention, including four Americans.”
The Russian’s are welcoming back a total of eight people, including convicted Russian assassin Vadim Krasikov. The entire trade depended on the release of Vladimir Putin’s favorite hitman.

The swap concludes “years of complicated behind-the-scenes negotiations involving the US, Russia, Belarus and Germany, ultimately leading Berlin to agree to Moscow’s key demand.” Krasikov.
We also scored the return of “Putin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza, who is a U.S. permanent resident, and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva.”
We haven’t done a prisoner trade like this for a really long time, national security officials note.

Not since the Cold War
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan was happy to talk to reporters about something which doesn’t involve the lack of a ceasefire in Gaza or the lack of competence in Joe Biden.
“Not since the Cold War has there been a similar number of individuals exchanged in this way and there has never, so far as we know, been an exchange involving so many countries, so many close US partners and allies working together.” Kamala Harris had nothing to do with the trade at all.
Within hours, “Whelan, Gershkovich and Kurmasheva were on their way back to the U.S.,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced. Besides being happy about a trade that frees Americans, he’s also relieved about news that broke involving that Hamas commander. The one who got blasted while visiting Tehran was killed by a planted bomb.
He was exchanged in today’s prison exchange procedure in Turkey:

Blinky quickly denied knowing anything about it ahead of time but nobody believed him. He’s off the hook now. Some cleaning lady packed with high explosives breezed right through all the IRGC security check points. Or, was escorted through.
Joe Biden was grinning from ear-to-ear as he read the happy news off the teleprompter. The trade, he declared, was “a feat of diplomacy.” One that’s been working through the diplomatic system for way too long.
“Some of these women and men have been unjustly held for years. All have endured unimaginable suffering and uncertainty. Today, their agony is over.” Joe’s will soon be over as well but he isn’t ready to accept that it’s time to step down yet.
