A four-year-old toddler is critically injured but alive after a fall from a fifth floor window in Brooklyn, New York. He landed on hard concrete. The air conditioner which preceded him out into space didn’t do much to cushion his fall.

Toddler falls flat in Flatbush

The 4-year-old boy was enjoying his day as a typical toddler, playing in the family’s fifth-floor apartment. As related by authorities, around 8:45 p.m. the child “pushed out the AC window unit and tumbled down behind it.

The six-story building along East 21st Street near Church Avenue in Flatbush has a concrete apron below the window.

If the toddler grows up to identify as a cat when he gets older, everyone will understand why. Instinctively, cats reposition their body for optimal landing under similar conditions.

The longer the fall, the more time to relax and get ready, along with beneficial effects from air drag. Luckily, the child survived the impact. Police note he “apparently landed on the pavement in the back of the building, without anything to break his fall.

Police aren’t revealing the name of the toddler but neighbors like Trena Taylor know him well. “From the sound of the fall, I didn’t know what it was, but I heard the boom when he hit the ground — like, BOOM.” That was probably the air conditioner.

She lives next door. “I was getting dressed for work and I heard someone in the hallway say, ‘Call 911.” She thought there might be a fire in the building but didn’t know what was going on.

Rushed to the hospital

As Ms. Taylor went running to her own window, she “saw the father running to the basement with a neighbor.” Emergency crews rushed the toddler to nearby Maimonides Medical Center.

Doctors have him listed as “critical but stable.” That means there’s a real good chance he’ll pull through but it’s going to be touch and go.

The good news is that he was conscious after the fall because Ms. Taylor could hear him crying. “I’m very happy that he survived,” she added.

I was shocked when they brought him out on a stretcher and he was crying. I didn’t see any blood. I was like, ‘Oh my God, thank God he’s crying, he’s breathing.” The toddler is one of the family’s three sons.

For the most part, the family are good neighbors. “They don’t normally make noise or any loud screaming or anything like that.” One of the other children has “special needs.” The sibling is “very hyperactive, always moving around, running around.

She described the parents as “very nice people” who “always spend time with their children.” It’s not like the toddler was neglected or left alone unsupervised. “I’m just so sad that that happened to them. What happened yesterday was a shock to everybody.
