Ukrainian Pilots Launch Daring Raid on Russian Territory

Two Ukrainian helicopters have reportedly carried out a daring and successful raid on a fuel depot in the border city of Belgorod, meaning that Ukraine has made its first incursion into Russia itself. Witnesses filmed two helicopters flying at a low altitude to avoid detection and fire missiles at the depot. Russia confirmed that the attack had taken place but Ukraine has officially denied ordering the strike.

Russians caught off-guard by nighttime raid

The Russian oil company that owns the facility stated that no one was seriously hurt in the explosion or the ensuing fire, which was eventually contained.

The attack was an outstanding display of skill from the Ukrainian pilots, who managed to evade Russian air defenses en route to the target and safely return across the border.

Strangely, the  Ukrainian government has denied responsibility for the successful raid while the Kremlin did not hesitate to announce that the strike had come from Ukrainian helicopters.

This is the opposite of what one would expect; Ukraine is refusing to take credit for a major achievement while Russia is admitting an embarrassing failure.

A foreign country’s military has not carried out an attack on Russian soil since the Second World War. The raid was a major lapse in its air defense carried out by a country that shouldn’t even have useable aircraft after more than a month of war.

The helicopters entered Russian airspace at a low enough altitude to avoid detection by air defense systems, but someone may still be getting sent to Siberia for this one.

Ukraine officially denies responsibility

If Ukraine really wasn’t involved then there are several other possibilities, though none are especially convincing given the evidence that has emerged so far.

There could have been an accident at the depot which Russia chose to blame Ukraine for, but there is seemingly conclusive footage depicting helicopters firing missiles.

Alternatively, it could be argued that Russia staged the strike to accuse Ukraine of attacking its territory, thus depicting Kiev as an aggressor. This is also unlikely, as Russia would have no reason to include an embarrassing blunder in a false flag attack.

The raid might have been carried out by rogue Ukrainian pilots acting without orders, but such a successful incursion must have had some degree of support and planning.

It seems most likely that Kiev ordered the strike, but it is not clear why they would deny responsibility. The main benefit to such a raid would be the morale impact, which could be compared to the success of the Doolittle Raid in 1942.

Fear of a backlash from Russia would be strange, as Russia is already engaged in a full-scale invasion. If reports are accurate, Kiev can at least be privately proud to have some truly daring and talented helicopter pilots.
