Sam Bankman-Fried, a disgraced cryptocurrency mogul, recently had one less charge to worry about when he goes to trial thanks to Biden’s Department of Justice.
On Thursday, the DOJ announced that campaign finance charges against Bankman-Fried would be dropped as part of his extradition from the Bahamas.
Although Bankman-Fried will still be charged with seven counts related to wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, one has to wonder why this particular charge was dropped.
It makes you question if it really pays to have donated millions of dollars during the 2022 election cycle to Democrat campaigns and their associated causes.
After all, such donations included those made by Bankman-Fried himself – contributions which likely included those made towards President Joe Biden’s own reelection campaign.
The DOJ released a statement saying “The Government has been informed that The Bahamas notified the United States earlier today that The Bahamas did not intend to extradite the defendant on the campaign contributions count… Accordingly, in keeping with its treaty obligations to The Bahamas, the Government does not intend to proceed to trial on the campaign contributions count.”
This implies Bankman-Fried’s freedom came at a price – paid for by taxpayers’ hard earned dollars as well as international treaties between foreign governments meant only for diplomatic relations.
It is no secret that money talks in our society today – especially when it comes from someone who already holds a great deal of wealth like Sam Bankman-Fried.
In fact, it seems like his financial contributions were enough for him get away from facing any consequences related to campaign finance charges, something many ordinary citizens would not be able experience unless they had deep pockets too.
Such cases truly highlight why there needs more equitable practices within our legal system so no one – regardless of race or economic status – is left behind when justice should prevail over all else.
