Last week, lawmakers revealed that the Pentagon has been paying for the censorship of conservative voices. The House Oversight Committee has had their eye on “NewsGuard” for quite a while. On October 25, the committee announced that the brass were just as concerned about silencing Donald Trump supporters as the State Department and the the European Union were.

Pentagon pays for censorship

Fact-checking” firm NewsGuard is a for-profit organization who gets their funding from government sources including the Pentagon. That’s the same firm who “blacklisted” the New York Post for printing conservative oriented content. The connection was just uncovered from a letter House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer wrote to NewsGuard.

The Republican from Kentucky is demanding “more details about the public-private collaboration that led last year to the State Department being sued by conservative outlets that were labeled more ‘risky‘ than their liberal counterparts.

NewsGuard thought they had that handled by briefing committee staff “on contracts it had with the Defense Department in 2021, including the Cyber National Mission Force within US Cyber Command; the State Department and its Global Engagement Center; and the EU’s Joint Research Centre.

It seems that the Pentagon was involved with more than they were letting on.

The Committee writes today to seek additional documents and communications from NewsGuard related to all past and present contracts with or grants administered by federal government agencies or any other government entity, including foreign governments.

Comer isn’t happy that the Pentagon is conducting operations against United States citizens.

The Pentagon has been paying for the censorship of conservative voices.

Dangerous and misguided

As Comer wrote to CEOs Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz, “the protection of First Amendment rights of American citizens is paramount and attempts by government actors to infringe on those rights is dangerous and misguided.

The Pentagon is supposed to stay out of domestic affairs. That’s what we have the police for. The FBI are allegedly part of that domestic law enforcement but we’ve all seen how the Federal Bureau of Instigation really works.

Back in June, the Oversight Committee started probing “NewsGuard’s apparent participation in a government-funded ‘censorship campaign’ to allegedly discredit and even demonetize news outlets by sharing its ratings of their reliability with advertisers.

It was the demonetize part that really did the most damage. Since NewsGuard had been hobnobbing with the Defense Department, it wasn’t a big stretch to connect the Pentagon.

One of the things which concerns Comer and his panel is the habit NewsGuard employees have of “sharing social media posts exhibiting left-wing bias.” It’s a blatant violation of the company’s own policies. It’s not surprising that the censors throttled “disfavored,” meaning conservative, outlets by labeling them as providing “misinformation.

Even true and verifiable facts were censored which didn’t fit the official narrative. “One case included a published academic study on the failure of lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic.” NewsGuard needs to cough up “all records of its contracts, grants or other work with the Pentagon, the State Department and any other federal agencies or departments.” They have until November 8. Apparently, the panel is counting on Trump’s victory.
