Shop NowEventbrite, a leading event management and ticketing company, recently canceled an upcoming event in Calgary, Canada. The event was organized by cultural critic Dr. James Lindsay and titled “Save Our Kids”. According to Eventbrite’s Trust and Safety team, the event violated their policy on Hateful, Dangerous, or Violent Content and Events.

Dr. Lindsay criticized the decision made by Eventbrite in a statement to The Post Millennial saying that it was an attempt at censorship as he believes his talk would feature truths that companies and governments do not want heard. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Eventbrite has pulled conservative-leaning events from their platform either; they have also canceled two other events featuring members of the LGBTQ+ community speaking out against radical trans agendas as well as a women’s free speech event in Austin, Texas due to backlash from transgender activists.

“These acts of attempted censorship won’t prevent the event, will attract attention, and will encourage me to be even plainer in my speech so that Canadians can hear truths these companies and their government don’t want them to hear,” Lindsay said in an interview over the cancelation.
The cancelation of these types of events raises serious concerns regarding freedom of speech and expression especially since these events are being targeted just because they are countercultural or do not align with certain views or ideologies held by those in power. This kind of censorship can be dangerous for democracy if left unchecked as it allows powerful entities to silence minority opinions without consequence.

As citizens, we must call attention to attempts at censorship like this one so that our voices can be heard without fear of reprisal or punishment for thinking differently than those in control. Free speech is essential for any democracy to function properly so it is important that we keep fighting for it no matter what kind of pushback we may face along the way.
