Shop NowMark Mester, a popular anchor at KTLA, was fired for going off-script after the sudden departure of his long-time cohost and close friend Lynette Romero.
This event has caused widespread criticism from viewers, with many believing that KTLA handled things poorly.
At the time of Romero’s departure from the station, Mark Mester took to social media to show his support in a number of ways.
He posted ahead of his broadcast letting followers know he had words to share about his friend and shared a video on Instagram of an airplane flying over the KTLA studio reading “we love you Lynette!”
Later on during his broadcast, Mester went off-script for four minutes to express how sorry he was towards viewers for how they were treated by the network and asked them to forgive them for their mistake.
In response to Mark’s actions following Romero’s abrupt exit, management suspended him immediately before ultimately firing him a week later in an announcement made within the newsroom by General Manager Janene Drafs.
She told those present that “[Mester] is no longer at KTLA5″. Many are claiming this move was unwarranted as both Mester and Romero were fan favorites at KTLA, with Mester having just started his own cooking series called “Mesters Meals” in early August which gained sponsorship from Mother’s Market & Kitchen.
The reaction to this situation has been divided amongst viewers with some sympathizing more with Mark than others have been critical towards him for going off script during his broadcast in order to make such comments about the station’s handling of events without proper warning or approval beforehand.
Despite these mixed reactions however it appears that most people agree that their departures should have been handled differently and feel frustrated with how this incident was managed overall by management at KTLA 5.
