“Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion,” David Popp, McConnell’s spokesperson, said. “He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment.”
Witnesses say that the accident occurred at a fund-raising dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and the Capitol. Other Republican senators attended the function as well but claim that they were not at the dinner that followed, so they did not witness the accident.

After his fall, Mr. McConnell, who is 81 years old, was taken by ambulance to George Washington University Hospital.
McConnell might be absent from the Senate for some time, at this time it is unclear how quickly the elderly McConnell will recover. The Senate Minority Leader has a history of falls due to contracting polio as a child which left him with a slight limp.
Wednesday was a busy day for Mitch as he had been at the Capitol well into the evening as the Senate voted to overturn a new District of Columbia criminal code that reduces mandatory minimum sentences for some violent offenses.
