The recent news of Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein‘s death has caused quite a stir as many individuals are now eyeing her former position. With 13 months remaining of her term, people are turning to California Governor Gavin Newsom to determine who he is planning to appoint as her replacement.

With national ambitions in mind, many believe that this decision could shape Newsom’s future career. Alongside this thought is speculation regarding two incredibly prominent figures within the United States: Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle.

Oprah Winfrey has been floated as a potential candidate to replace Senator Feinstein according to Newsmax and The Desert Sun. However, back in May she indicated that she would not be considering the seat should it become vacant.

This statement raises questions about why her name has come up again; is there something more than meets the eye?

On top of these rumors surrounding Oprah Winfrey is talk about Duchess Meghan Markle potentially taking over Feinstein’s role despite residing in Montecito, California with Prince Harry.

While her name had already been considered before Biden chose Kamala Harris as his running mate last year, sources close to Gloria Steinem have reported that she “has been introducing Meghan to pivotal people within the party” due to Markle’s interest in politics above all else.

That being said, some Democratic donors believe that it is an impossible feat — but crazier things have happened.

Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his desire to appoint a black woman for Senator Feinstein’s post due to his commitment towards honoring her legacy however Rep Barbara Lee – one of California’s most prominent Black women currently serving – believes otherwise stating “the idea that a Black woman should be appointed only as a caretaker…is insulting.”

She was joined by Aimee Allison who said “Black women are not mere caretakers but the voting and organizing center of the national Democratic Party.”
