Shop NowLeftist celebrity Kumail Nanjiani has raised some eyebrows on the right by sarcastically telling supporters of a candidate he opposes to vote on the wrong date in a Twitter post. This wouldn’t be especially noteworthy were it not for the fact that the owner of at least one prominent pro-Trump Twitter account currently faces years in prison for doing essentially the same thing in 2016. Nanjiani, who is both an actor and a leftist, is probably in no danger of being jailed for the joke any time soon.
Celebrity spreads election disinformation
Nanjiani was calling for supporters of Karen Bass to vote in today’s primary, and the post made it clear that he is calling on only supporters of Karen Bass to vote today.
Bass is running for the Democratic nomination to become the next mayor of Los Angeles. She doesn’t need to worry about Republican challengers in that race, but former Republican challengers has turned out to be a different story.
Far-left actor Nanjiani was specifically advising supporters of Rick Caruso to vote on the wrong date. Caruso, now a Democrat, is a prominent Los Angeles businessman and a former Republican.
Bass is the mainstream Democrat choice, but the race has been close and Caruso has presented a sufficiently serious challenge that a left-wing activist like Nanjiani would advise his millions of followers to vote on the wrong date if they support him.
This reminder from Nanjiani was a joke, but gullible people may still fall for it and that has been enough to result in bans and arrests for Trump supporters in the past.
Nanjiani has either quietly deleted his post or someone has deleted it for him, meaning that he must now be aware of the potential consequences.

Will there be charges?
Would anyone be dim enough to fall for this obvious joke? The FBI thinks so. One of the first arrests it made after Joe Biden was sworn in as president was related to a nearly identical joke.
Before the 2016 election, pro-Trump Twitter personality Douglass Mackey reputedly distributed memes and text messages sarcastically informing supporters of Hillary Clinton that they could vote by text.
The prank messages informed Democrats that they could be part of history and elect the first female president if they simply “Text ‘Hillary’ to 59925.”
Anyone who deserves to have a say in choosing who the world’s most powerful person will be for the next four years would not believe that these were serious voting instructions, but prosecutors say that nearly 5,000 people proceeded to text their votes for Hillary to the designated number.
The sarcastic scheme put Mackey in jail for depriving people of their right to vote, and he faces as many as ten years in prison for the joke.
Nanjiani’s social media following is exponentially larger than Mackey’s was and some ignorant people could very well fall for his disinformation. Will the leftist celebrity face any consequences for seeking to deprive Caruso supporters of their voting rights?
