The suspect, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, used the execution of Officer Darron Burks as bait to lure Dallas police into an ambush. Two more cops were injured during the ensuing gun battle. The whole thing started around 10 p.m. Thursday. That’s when the 30-year-old suspect “arrived at the For Oak Cliff community center and parked his car.” Things got bizarre from there.

Officer was ‘executed’

Officer Burks was executed,” Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia declared. “I know that the word ambush has been thrown around in the last 24 hours or so.” That is not what happened here and the chief wanted to make that clear.

His other officers were ambushed and Burks was used as bait. The center is hailed by the community as a “safe space” for all sorts of activities and also hosts a food bank.

Around 10 p.m. on August 29, Burks was in his marked cruiser, parked near the front entrance of the building. Cobb-Bey casually strolled up and began chatting.

He was also recording their conversation with his phone. Without any warning, “the suspect then pulled out a handgun and executed officer Burks as he sat in his vehicle.

Dispatch noticed an “unusual transmission” from Burks’ radio so fellow officers “were deployed to look for him.” They found the car, with officer Burks inside. They couldn’t get to it.

While waiting for the cops to arrive, Cobb-Bey set up his ambush. He retrieved a shotgun from his own car and positioned it for easy access on the roof of the squad car. Then, he waited.

Gun battle begins

Jamie Farmer was the first responding officer. As soon as she arrived on the scene the suspect opened fire with his handgun. She “returned fire and ran across the parking lot.

Meanwhile, “the suspect then grabbed the shotgun from the squad car roof and fired again at Farmer, hitting her in the leg as she ran.” Karissa David didn’t do much better.

Officer David arrived “a minute after Farmer.” The suspect “ran toward David, shooting at her multiple times as she exited her vehicle at the entrance of the parking lot.” She was “shot in the face during the exchange, moments before a sergeant arrived at the scene.

It took five minutes for the paramedics to get there. “Farmer was treated and released from the hospital Friday, while David remains in critical but stable condition.

The suspect managed to flee the scene in a vehicle with Dallas cops in hot pursuit. They cornered him in Lewisville, which lies to the north of Dallas.

The preliminary investigation reports “the suspect got out of the vehicle with a long gun, was shot by Dallas Police officers multiple times, and died at the scene.” The investigation already revealed enough that police can say for certain the execution of officer Burks was “premeditated.” The killer left a clear trail on social media.
