The family of Karmelo Anthony, who stabbed a fellow student to death, are using his defense fund to buy a new house and to install supposed “security” measures.

Anthony was arrested in early April after he stabbed Austin Metcalf to death at a track meet near Dallas, Texas. Evidence indicates that Anthony was looking for trouble, despite his claims of “self-defense,” as he illegally brought a knife to the track meet. The incident began when Anthony purposely sat under the opposing team’s tent at a track meet. Metcalf, who was a member of that team, reportedly told Anthony to leave the tent and go to his own team’s tent, but Anthony refused. Anthony then reportedly threatened Metcalf to “touch” him and “see what happens,” which prompted Metcalf to either touch Anthony, grab him, or grab his backpack — witness accounts have been unclear on this moment — and in response, Anthony pulled a knife out of his backpack and stabbed Metcalf in the heart, causing him to bleed out in the arms of his twin brother.

Anthony has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in a GiveSendGo legal defense fund, and now his family is spending $400,000 of that money on a lavish new home rather than for its intended purpose.

The murderer’s father reportedly told the court that he had taken those funds to move the family into a new home, citing supposed “threats.”

Andrew Anthony, a spokesperson for the family, claimed that Anthony’s home address had been leaked online, causing “graphic and racist threats” that supposedly included photos of “black children with knives stuck in their heads.”

The spokesman also admitted that not all of the donated money would be spent on Anthony’s legal defense, claiming: “It would be disingenuous to say there isn’t money… But it is not a bond fund. This family needs to be able to survive.”

“Every Texan has a right to defend themselves when they reasonably fear for their life. Self-defense is a protection that applies to each and every one of us. There are two sides to every story,” stated Anthony’s attorney, Michael Howard.

Of course, to claim self-defense, a person must reasonably fear for their lives, but there is no evidence to support that claim in Anthony’s case. He purposely antagonized his supposed “attacker,” and had every opportunity to leave the scene, as he was repeatedly asked to. Instead, he became belligerent and goaded Metcalf into touching him, which many people have deemed evidence that he wanted to stab someone that day.
