The Russia Investigative Committee has confirmed that when the phone was activated it immediately detonated causing shrapnel wounds to his head, neck and stomach leaving him in critical condition in intensive care.
His 21 year old son suffered three finger amputations as a result of this explosion.
The investigation into this failed assassination attempt has already brought about some results as authorities have detained a female suspect who has confessed to her involvement in the crime according to TASS.
It is unclear at this point what motive or agenda she had for targeting Afanasevskii however, further details are likely to be revealed when more information surfaces regarding her identity and background.
It is also believed that Ukrainian agents were behind the attack based on sources inside Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).
However, there has yet to be any official confirmation regarding this matter from either side involved in this conflict.
