Anthony Baugh’s front lawn wasn’t an optimal place for a crash landing. Most pilots aim for an open field or at least a roadway. Houses and trees made things extra difficult but both the pilot and his passenger limped away. The doorbell filmed the impact.

Plane crash on the lawn

Thanks to one of those trendy doorbell cameras, the crash landing was caught on video. Mrs. Baugh was home with the children just before 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 24. That’s when a couple of uninvited guests decided to drop in.

All was quiet, on a sunny day in the Utah town of Roy, until a twin-engine Piper PA-34 skidded across the lawn, tail first between the trees.

Instantly after the violent crash, Mrs. Baugh ran out front to assist. The Pilot and his female passenger were both in shock but alert. She “tried to offer them water” but that wasn’t a good idea under the circumstances.

The “gentleman had a cut on his eye or above it on his head and then the young lady just looked like she was in shock.” For now, the plane’s occupants haven’t been identified.

After Roy City Fire & Rescue appeared on the scene to tend to the injured aviators, Mrs. Baugh called Anthony. He was able to access the doorbell camera from his phone and was almost as shocked as the plane’s occupants.

One home was damaged along with some trees but nobody else was injured as a result the crash. Despite the fact the crisis was over, “It immediately left me in a panic trying to get home as fast as I could,” Anthony relates.

Near Ogden-Hinckley Airport

The NTSB and FAA are investigating the crash. They’re just happy that Boeing isn’t involved in this one.

When Neighbor Pat Bouwhuis heard the ruckus she “thought a house had exploded.” Not this time. “I came out front and I saw the airplane over in the driveway two doors down.

That’s not the sort of thing they see often in the suburban neighborhood. In fact, “she’s lived in the neighborhood for 62 years and has never seen anything like this happen before.

While this is a new one for Pat, it’s becoming an alarming trend for the town of Roy. There was a similar crash earlier the same week. It has to do with the fact they’re located near the Ogden-Hinckley Airport.

There were “nearly ten crashes near the Ogden airport since 1999, including one in 2005, which resulted in a wing falling onto Paul Genovesi’s house.

The plane’s occupants were a little shook up but the Baugh family found the whole experience “a little nerve wracking,” too. It hit home for them in a personal way. They had “some family members that passed away in a plane crash a few years ago.
