With the GOP taking over the House, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announcing that he would be leaving was not a surprise.

When it became clear that Senator Feinstein (D-CA) was no longer fit for office, the natural progression was for Schiff to move over to the Senate.

Schiff probably assumed that with his time in office and experience, he would be a lock for the seat, but that is definitely not going to be the case.

The Big Endorsement

Schiff could have stayed in the House until he dropped dead and been all but guaranteed of a seat.

Now, however, this term will probably be his last in government unless he decides to come back to the House in 2026.

I say this because Schiff now had a some very serious competition for that Senate seat.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) has announced that she will also be running for the seat, joining what is quickly becoming a very crowded field.

The moment Lee announced that she was going to run, she had to be considered the favorite to win the seat.

I say this because although Schiff has already gotten an endorsement from Pelosi, Lee will more than likely get the endorsement from Governor Newsom, who carries far more weight in the state among voters.

Going back to May 2021 when rumors about Feinstein possibly retiring first surfaced, Newsom went on record stating that he would nominate a black woman for the seat.

Right now, Lee is the only black woman in the race, so I have to think Newsom will get behind her campaign.

If that happens, it will be lights out for Schiff.

Lee is already tossing around the race card as well, stating, “Currently, there are no Black Women in the U.S. Senate, and there have only been two in our almost 250-year history.

“Our voices are sorely missed in the Senate. My lived experience as a Black woman making true progressive change for Californians will give a voice in the U.S. to those who are currently voiceless.”
