The clock was ticking on the January 6 Select Committee.
If they did not hand down referrals before the new term, they knew the committee would be disbanded.
This week, the criminal referrals were finally handed off to the DOJ.
In all, the committee has recommended four charges be filed against former President Donald J. Trump.
Arrest Him
The committee has concluded that Trump should be charged providing aid and comfort to the January 6 mob, obstructing Congress’ Jan. 6 joint session, conspiracy to make false statements to the National Archives, and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Now, this committee has no formal legal standing.
So, the only way this means anything is if the DOJ does decide to file charges.
Chairman Benny Thompson stated, “Faith in our system is the foundation of American democracy. If the faith is broken, so is our democracy.
“Donald Trump broke that faith. He lost the 2020 election and knew it, but he chose to try to stay in office through a multi-part scheme.”
This is a huge ask of Garland, especially since the special counsel is nowhere near wrapping up his investigation.
Garland gets one shot here, and if he swings and misses, he reenergizes Trump and his base.
Eventually, I think Trump will have charges filed against him, I just don’t think it will be via these committee recommendations.
