A top state senator in New Jersey is changing teams.
At 87, NJ State Senator Samuel Thompson was being questioned by his fellow Republicans if he could still do the job.
His answer was to leave the Republican Party and register as a Democrat.
Betrayal
One would think at 87, it is time to move on, but most of these politicians today prefer to die in office.
I don’t know what it is that they continue to run for office and get elected at these ages.
Thompson was no different, only party leadership was telling him it was probably time to move on.
Thompson responded, “The betrayal by so many of my friends — that was too much for me.
“I am not leaving my party.
“My party leadership has left me.”
Middlesex County Republican Chairman Rob Bengivenga stated that he did not want Thompson to no longer be involved, just give up his seat.
He was hoping that Thompson could serve as a mentor to the next generation, which sounds reasonable.
He stated, “I was hoping the Senator would embrace it and work together as a mentor and advisor for the years to come.”
In the overall scheme of things, it is really no big deal, as Democrats already hold a huge advantage in the state senate in New Jersey.
Even though he will be serving as a Democrat, Thompson has proven to be a pretty hardline conservative in the past, so I am not sure what, if anything, Democrats gain here.
