Shop NowNATO is having a really hard time coping with the concept of Donald Trump running the United States. He’s about to go and negotiate an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. They’re looking less relevant every day. How can they skim a profit for their own European nations if Trump stops the flow of military aid? To protect their own interests, they’re seizing control ahead of Trump’s inauguration, with Pentagon help.
NATO takes charge
CNN is breathlessly reporting that “NATO has taken over air defenses in Poland from the U.S.” They make sure to point out that they’re doing it “just days before the inauguration” of President Donald Trump.
A spokesunit for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization relates that they’re totally confused “about the incoming administration’s approach to the alliance and to Ukraine.”
They’re terrified that President Trump will make good on his promise to negotiate an end to the war. On January 9, just about the same time Trump was announcing that they’re setting up the meeting with Vlad Putin, “NATO assumed command and control” from the United States.
Colonel Martin O’Donnell claims the power shift “will help to safeguard logistics nodes in Poland that are needed to continue delivering aid crucial to Ukraine’s war effort against Russia.”
They’re not hiding the fact that the decision comes now because they’re trying to “Trump-proof” the assistance. O’Donnell confirms “the move is part of a broader effort that has been in the works for months to shift the burden of helping Ukraine from the U.S. to European countries, amid questions over whether U.S. support would continue under the Trump administration.”
NATO simply doesn’t want to accept Trump’s assurance that he’ll keep the bombs and missiles stocked until the war is over.

We don’t need them
Not only have NATO allies “been bracing for U.S. support for Ukraine to shrink over the next year,” Trump questions the value of U.S. commitment to the alliance. Especially when they’ve all been shirking their funding obligations for years.
He might pull the United States out of the alliance completely and where would that leave them? Practically defenseless.
The Europeans justify their power grab by stating that while Trump “has said he wants to end the war he has not yet weighed in on whether his administration will continue providing military assistance to Ukraine.” He’s not going to leave Zelenskyy hung out to dry.

NATO also overlooks the fact there are other weapons Trump can bring to bear. Ones which aren’t military in nature. They get deployed on the negotiating table, so there’s no profit to be raked off for any of the suppliers.
Meanwhile, the Trump proofing work is “ongoing, with NATO shouldering more and more responsibility every day,” O’Donnell assures. On his way out the door, lame duck Joe Biden printed up a quick $500 million for another “military aid package.” The alliance knows that’s the “final expected package from the outgoing leadership.”
Soon to be replaced Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was on hand at the last meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. “We must not stop now,” Austin declared. “The coalition to support Ukraine must not flinch. It must not falter. And it must not fail.” NATO isn’t happy that Trump wants to stop it all by ending the conflict.
