This time, however, it was not a motion filed by his defense team.
This was something done on his behalf by the Attorney General of Missouri.
Denied
AG Andrew Baily had filed a motion to postpone Trump’s sentencing for the hush-money case until after the election.
When he made the motion, New York Attorney General Letitia James responded, “Missouri’s suit is based entirely on an ongoing criminal case between the Manhattan DA and former President Trump and does not present an actual controversy between sovereign States.
“Moreover, former President Trump has already raised, and the New York state courts are already adjudicating, the same issues Missouri seeks to raise, and Missouri’s claims are patently meritless.”
The problem for Bailey is that he has no standing in this case, so the motion was denied.
Trump was found guilty on a 34-count indictment, with sentencing currently set for September 18.
Bailey wanted it pushed back for obvious reasons, as it would be devastating for Trump to be sentenced to prison in the middle of an election, especially if the judge decides he needs to immediately report to jail.
Now, realistically, I doubt Trump will get any jail time, and even if he does, since the appeals process has not yet played out, I would be surprised if the judge would make such a demand.
Having said that, this is going to create negative press for Trump, and the Democrats are going to jump all over it when it happens.
This will be taking place right around the time polls start to simmer down and early voting begins, so it will definitely impact the election.
We have gone from a landslide win for Trump to a coin flip at best against Kamala Harris.
And yes, I am concerned at this point because the GOP is sitting on its hands and Donald Trump continues to slip in polling.
Keep in mind, Harris will get another bump from her convention, and then we have this sentencing hearing in September.
This is not a good situation for Trump at all.
