The state of Ohio plans to start something new in schools which infuriates progressives, teaching students to read. Liberals are going totally frantic because the plan isn’t just for youngsters to be able to vocalize the words but actually understand them, too. That will give them the ability to think and reason. It could have children daring to question the psychological birth control programming.

Learn to read

When liberals got a look at the state of Ohio’s planned budget and noticed a chunk going toward teaching children to read, they went frantic. Governor Mike DeWine has progressives enraged by funding the “science of reading method.” Ohio wants to spend $64 million for science of reading curricula in the next two years.

That works out to “$43 million each year for the next two years to offer science of reading instruction for educators, and $12 million to support 100 literacy coaches in schools and districts.

If we don’t do something soon, the next generation will have devolved back to the point and grunt stage. Gen Z is already limited to smiley face hieroglyphics.

DeWine told reporters on March 23, “I truly believe there’s nothing more important than the science of reading, and making sure that every single child in the state of Ohio, as they are learning to read, has the benefit of the science.” The new method starts with phonics but that’s only a beginning.

DeWine “has been making literacy stops in classrooms around Ohio to learn about how the science of reading method has been implemented in lessons.” He’s impressed.

The method “incorporates phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension,” Brett Tingley explains. He’s president of both Parents for Reading Justice and OH-KID, a program for children with Dyslexia. Everyone can learn to read with this method.

Systematic, explicit and direct

According to DeJunne’ Clark Jackson, president of the Center for Literacy and Learning, what’s different about the science of reading method is the way it’s based on a program that’s “systematic, explicit, and direct.” It’s also “based on the system of processing language.

Skeptics suggest that the method “doesn’t do enough to provoke the kind of thinking that enables deep comprehension in realistic reading situations.” That may be true but you need a solid foundation before you can read at more advanced levels. Without that solid core, students will never reach the full comprehension of heavily technical material.

Comprehension, experts say, is “a multidimensional experience.” They “want children to comprehend what’s happening literally in the text (who did what when), but we also want them to be able to analyze how parts of the text (literary devices, figurative language, structural choices) work together to develop ideas.

Currently, they can’t comprehend the television listings. The goal is to get the students to read well enough to “interpret the purpose and significance of the text in relation to their lives and to society.”

They will never learn to read unless someone weans them off of picture books. What they call the “structured literacy” approach “applies the knowledge of the science of reading method, and it includes explicit and systematic instruction in foundational reading skills, including phonics. The science of reading says most children need explicit phonics when learning how to read.” Once they master the words themselves, comes “language comprehension.

Progressives employ what’s called “balanced literacy” to incorporate a “three-cueing method, which encourages children to read words by asking three questions: Does it make sense? Does it sound right? Does it look right?” They use an example. “There could be a picture of a horse on a book’s page and a student may say ‘pony.’ When you get to books without pictures your strategy’s not working.” The science of reading method eliminates guessing. “We don’t want them looking at pictures.
