It came as a surprise to many when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy backed efforts to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Democrats and Republicans alike are feeling the effects of the broken system.

Joe Biden is unlikely to fire Garland, who is also responsible for keeping Biden and his family members out of prison.

Now, moderate Republicans find themselves in a precarious position—do they fight against impeachment or not?

When news broke that Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was throwing his support behind efforts to impeach Attorney General Merrick Garland, both Democrats and moderate Republicans were taken aback.

The Hill reported that “some members” found this surprising given much of the GOP impeachment furor had been directed at other Biden officials like Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Joe Biden himself.

Republican Darrell Issa has already gone on record saying he doesn’t know of any crime chargeable against Garland.

But McCarthy isn’t letting this stop him from carrying out his mission: “When a prosecutor shields his boss’s son from investigators, it smells like a cover-up,” he said. “Garland’s DOJ did not aggressively follow the money.”

He went on to say Congress must get answers regarding why no one is being held accountable for their actions.

It seems clear that McCarthy wants to keep his job as speaker for as long as possible and sees impeachment as an avenue through which he can do this—despite objections from RINOs.

Republican Congressman Issa summed up the situation clearly: “It’s very, very popular with people in the hinterlands…But the reality is that if someone is faithfully executing the desires and orders of President of United States,  then they’re within the bounds of what Cabinet officers do.”

Ultimately though, it comes down to whether or not Joe Biden will fire Merrick Garland and there’s no chance that’s going to happen as “Merrick Garland…really runs this country. In order to impeach him, he needs to be charged with a crime. The AG made it crystal clear long ago that anything he or the FBI does is totally legal, always.”

So despite all effort being put forth by McCarthy and other GOP leaders towards impeachment, it seems likely nothing major will come out of it in terms of losing office or facing criminal charges because Joe won’t fire him due to needing him on board in order protect himself from potential criminal charges.
