Pennsylvania Senator, John Fetterman, recently opened up about his ongoing struggles with depression.

In an interview with The New York Times, the freshman senator made a stunning admission: he doesn’t “even like himself.”

This isn’t the first time that Fetterman has been open about his mental health issues; in May 2022, he suffered from a stroke and shortly thereafter had to check himself into Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment of clinical depression.

After several weeks of treatment, Fetterman was released from the hospital and issued a press release stating that he is now in remission.

In The New York Times interview, the Democrat also spoke candidly about how his ongoing battle with depression has provided him an opportunity to be very bipartisan when it comes to this topic – regardless of political party lines.

He said “if you have depression, get help please…do not leave behind a blueprint of that.”

He then went on to use a tablet equipped with voice-to-text dictation so he could answer questions from people in the hallways of Congress without having to speak out loud.

Fetterman was absent from Senate roll call votes for 53 out of 64 days due to being hospitalized.

As one can imagine this caused some difficulty for Senate Democrats who were already facing challenges managing absences during this period due to other senators such as Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), both of which missed substantial amounts of time due to injury or illness.
