The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Leomeir Kennedy, a 31-year-old transgender man, was found unresponsive in their jail cell on Friday morning and pronounced dead at the scene.
Kennedy had been held in custody since April after confessing to molesting three children – two of whom were patients at Hopebridge Autism Therapy Center in Greenwood, Indiana.
The probable cause affidavit stated that Kennedy admitted to molesting a child while babysitting in October 2017.
He claimed it happened once while changing the child’s diaper.
Fox 59 reported earlier this year that investigators said Kennedy also admitted to molesting another child while tickling them and described it as feeling like ‘Christmas’ when he touched the child.
Furthermore, a search of Kennedy’s electronics reportedly found a search on DuckDuckGo of a ‘13-year-old gang raped’ and two sexual images of very young children he received from someone on the Whispr app.
The mother of one victim – who is nonverbal – told Fox 59 she began noticing changes her child’s behavior in January such as increased temper tantrums, aggression and self-injury.
She said: “They can’t talk to us…for someone who we have to trust and they have to trust to do something like this is sickening. It’s terrible.”
It is heartbreaking for families who trusted an individual with caring for their vulnerable children only for them to be taken advantage of in such an abhorrent way by someone they should have been able to trust implicitly.
Kennedy was due to stand trial at the end of July but this has now been moved back until September following their death which may or may not be suicide related according what Johnson County Coroner has said thus far about the situation.
