As many states across America face their own crisis of overcrowding and homelessness, New York City is experiencing a new challenge: migrant tent cities.
Recently, Guardian Angels founder and former Republican nominee for New York City mayor, Curtis Sliwa was arrested while protesting against a newly established migrant tent city in Queens.
This incident serves as an example of the strife that the Big Apple is facing due to this surge in migrants.
Video footage showed Sliwa and his supporters chanting “Have pity. No tent city!” at Creedmoor Hospital Grounds where the shelter for migrants had been built.
They were also heard criticizing Mayor Eric Adams for not representing “American people who are citizens of New York City who pay their taxes [and] afford to put you in a $5000 customized suit each and every day.”
As a result, Sliwa was taken away by law enforcement officers though the NYPD did not confirm his arrest Wednesday night.
According to Mayor Eric Adams’ office, since spring over 93,000 migrants have entered New York City which has led to there being no room left indoors for them to stay in.
At an earlier press conference he had stated that they would have to figure out how to localize this inevitable madness so that it doesn’t become another municipality with tent cities all over the place.
However, last week pictures and video showed that The Roosevelt Hotel – where some migrants had been staying – had reached full capacity leading some having no choice but sleep outside its walls instead.
It can be seen from this situation that more needs to be done not only for those already here but also future arrivals if NYC wants any hope of avoiding becoming another municipality with tent cities everywhere.
It’s clear from this story that something must be done about both existing migrant homeless encampments as well as preventing them from popping up again elsewhere within NYC before it becomes too late.
Otherwise it may become just another municipality with tents spreading all throughout its streets like what we’ve seen happening in other parts of America recently.
