Family Member Of Teen Killed By Homeowner’s Son During Burglary Claimed AR-15 Made Fight ‘Unfair’

A family member of one of the teenagers killed while he was committing a burglary is speaking out, insinuating that the AR-15 made the fight ‘unfair.’

Leroy Schumacher, the grandfather of 17 year old Jacob Redfearn, claims that the deaths of his grandson and his friends were not necessary.

“What these three boys did was stupid,” he said. “They knew they could be punished for it but they did not deserve to die.”

Redfearn and his two accomplices, 19 year old Maxwell Cook and 16 year old Jake Woodruff, broke into a home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

The teens, who were dressed in all black and wearing masks to cover their faces, kicked in a glass door in the back of the home to gain entry.

The homeowner’s son, 23 year old Zach Peters, was startled awake by the noise, and grabbed his family’s AR-15. He stepped into the hallway and opened fire upon seeing the burglars, who were armed with brass knuckles and a knife. Peters then retreated into his bedroom, barricaded the door, and called 911. All three teens died from their wounds.

According to reporting from Tulsa World, “Blood tests revealed Maxwell Cook, 18, to have amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system at the time he was killed. Jaykob Woodruff, 15, tested positive for trace amounts of amphetamine… Toxicology tests found no drugs or alcohol in Redfearn’s system.”

Schumacher says that his grandson was never in trouble before. Obviously, looking at the people he was hanging out with, either his grandfather didn’t know what was going on, or something radically changed in a very short period of time before this incident.

Redfearn’s grandfather went on to complain that the teen burglar didn’t stand a chance, which was exactly the point.

“Brass knuckles against an AR-15, come on, who was afraid for their life,” he said.

What does he expect the Peters to do? Just let the teens beat him to death with the brass knuckles? Wait until they beat him up a bit, then shoot them? Wait until they take his gun from him and kill him with it?

The shootings were ultimately ruled self-defense, and Peters was not charged with any crimes, which angers Schumacher.

“There’s got to be a limit to that law, I mean he shot all three of them; there was no need for that,” Schumacher said.

The grandfather claims that he supports the right to bear arms and to protect your home, but he doesn’t agree with shooting and killing intruders, so that seems pretty contradictory.

“These boys’ families are going to suffer with this the rest of their lives, we have to live with this the rest of our lives,” Schumacher said, while noting that he knew the situation was caused by the teens’ poor decisions.

The grandfather hopes that three teenagers’ deaths will serve as an example for others.

“You can’t change history, but you can damn sure learn from it, and maybe some kids will learn from this,” Schumacher said.
