California Teen’s Disappearance Being Investigated As Abduction

Authorities are now investigating the disappearance of a 16-year-old California teenager as an abduction.

The Lake Tahoe region continues to be searched by volunteers, law enforcement, as well as three helicopter teams for Kiely Rodni, the teen who went missing from a party taking place at the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California, during the weekend.

Rodni was last seen at the large party shortly after midnight on Saturday. The event gathered anywhere from 100 to 250 people, as it had been advertised on various social media sites, like Snapchat, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

And while authorities may be investigating the disappearance as an abduction, they are also considering other possibilities.

“We are treating her disappearance as an abduction right now because we have not been able to locate her vehicle,” sheriff spokesperson Angela Musallam reportedly said.

NBC affiliate KCRA 3 was informed by authorities that designating the case as an abduction permits them to use detectives and various other tools, despite not having proof that an abduction had occurred.

Oddly enough, an Amber Alert has yet to be issued for the case, however California Highway Patrol Truckee shares that there aren’t enough details to warrant the alert at this time.

The criteria for the alert include the victim being 17 or younger or having a disability, them being in impending danger of serious harm/death, as well as information must be available to assist in the discovery if shared with the general public.

The last criterion is that the abduction must be confirmed, which it has not been for this case.

The search continues, as friends and family hope for Kiely’s return.

“I can’t believe it. There has to have been one person — there were people sitting in cars, there were people everywhere around this place,” Kiely’s friend Sammi Smith told KCRA.

Smith told The Independent, “Right now we believe that it is an abduction case … she was in no state to drive and she wouldn’t have made it far or would have crashed.”

“At 12:36 a.m. she called me … and this is the last call anybody had with her. We said ‘love you, good night. Get home safe,’ and that’s the last thing we heard of her,” Samantha stated.

Kiely’s mother, Lindsey Rodni-Nieman continues to get people to provide information. “My head is all over the place and I’m terrified. Bad thoughts are very strong and hard to keep at bay,” Rodni-Nieman told KCRA. “But I’m trying to hold out hope, you know, that we’ll find her, that she’ll come home.”

“Despite the numerous resources we have utilized, Kiely and her vehicle are still missing,” the sheriff’s office said. “We are currently coordinating with the California Highway Patrol, Truckee Police, FBI, and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office as we continue our search for Kiely.”

Police dive unites have also reportedly joined the search.

A website has been created for the search and includes identifying features of Kiely like blonde hair, hazel eyes, 5’7″ tall and 118 pounds, last seen wearing a black tank top and green dickies pants. The missing teen drives a silver 2013 Honda CRV.

A reward of $50,000 in exchange for details that could lead to Kiely’s discovery have also been advertised, with a GoFundMe page helping to increase the reward amount.

An anonymous tip line has been established at (530) 581-6320, option 7. People with information should reach out to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office at 530-886-5375.
