A member of the Biden administration has been charged with felony theft. The official has been put on leave after being accused of stealing a mother’s Vera Bradley suitcase from an airport in Minnesota.

Sam Brinton is the deputy assistant secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition at the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy. Brinton has been accused of taking the Vera Bradley luggage from baggage claim at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport on September 16.

According to the court documents, the bag’s estimated value and contents were $2,325.

The 35. year-old Biden Administration official was caught on surveillance footage taking the bag from the carousel at around 4:45 p.m. This was after Brinton arrived at the airport on an American Airlines flight from Washington, DC.

The complaint against Brinton states the official took off the bag’s tag and left the area “at a quick pace.” Brinton then got into a cab and left the vicinity. American Airlines flight records show Brinton never checked a bag before leaving Washington DC.

Later surveillance footage caught Brinton checking into a luxury riverfront hotel in St. Paul with the bag.

Two days later when returning to DC Brinton was seen checking the bag before boarding. More footage was taken from Washington Dulles International Airport and showed Brinton carrying the bag at Washington after returning from a Europe trip on October 9.

Of course, when a Minnesota police officer called Brinton about the stolen property Brinton denied taking someone else’s bag.

“If I had taken the wrong bag, I am happy to return it, but I don’t have any clothes for another individual. That was my clothes when I opened the bag,” Brinton told the officer, as recorded on the court records.

The complaint then alleges that Brinton called the officer back two hours later. The reason for the call was to apologize for not being “completely honest” with the officer.

Brinton admitted to the officer that he picked up the wrong bag because he was tired. Briton claims he realized the switch when he arrived at the hotel and opened the suitcase.

Reports say that Brinton “got nervous people would think they stole the bag and did not know what to do.”
