Shop NowA shocking announcement was made this week by Pope Frances.
Pope Benedict, who stepped down in 2013, is in failing health.
Pope Frances is now asking for prayers, making it sound as though Benedict does not have much time left.
Final Days
The last time that Benedict was seen in public was in early December.
At the time he was seated, but you could tell that he was very frail.
Those around him have said that while his physical appearance has deteriorated, his mind is still sharp.
In his weekly general audience, Pope Francis addressed the health of the former pope.
He stated, “I would like to ask all of you for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict, who, in silence, is sustaining the Church.
“Let us remember him.
“He is very sick, asking the Lord to console and sustain him in this witness of love for the Church, until the end.”
Benedict was the first pope to step down from his role in 600 years.
He announced his resignation in early February 2013, citing failing physical and mental health issues.
Pope Francis was elected the following month.
Benedict has been residing in an old convent at the Vatican gardens since his retirement.
